Winterberry Charter School was awarded a 2006 Challenge Grant to make improvements to Quiyana Park. Volunteers planted a living willow fence, weeded and replanted the beds along 1st Avenue, added new picnic tables, a garbage can, boulders and sand play areas. The group obtained a permit required from the Alaska Railroad to work on Railroad property.

Volunteers also worked with designers and agencies to install an irrigation system in conjunction with an AWWU waterline upgrade project, planned for completion soon.
