Schools on Trails

Schools on Trails is designed to get students outside by empowering Anchorage teachers with tools and training to enhance education through outdoor experiences. Connection to nearby parks, trails, and green spaces ignite an adventurous spirit and encourage a love of learning and introduce students to their closest environment.

Schools on Trails Objectives

  • Support educators regularly in getting students outside doing any lesson or activity.
  • Raise awareness of trails, parks, streams, and natural areas near Anchorage schools.
  • Connect students and families to public spaces through hands-on learning opportunities.
  • Engage all Anchorage public schools, especially Title 1 schools with natural areas.
  • Provide students access to the social, mental, and physical benefits of nature.

Program Highlights

  • Outdoor School
    Anchorage School District 5th graders can spend two days in their nearest local park learning outdoor skills, recreation activities, history, science, and social-emotional skills.
  • Portable Outdoor Classroom Kits
    Check out a free portable kit with all the materials and activities you need to take a classroom outside.
  • Schools on Trails News
    Sign up for quarterly emails with information about grants, continuing education, outdoor activities, and inspiring articles on outdoor learning.
  • School Challenge Grants
    Check out some of the larger projects being implemented by teachers and schools such as outdoor classrooms, trail connections, and interpretive signage.
  • Teacher Resources for Outdoor Learning
    Learn more about the Schools on Trails resources and services available to help teachers get their students outdoors.
  • Schools on Trails Maps
    These maps highlight the connection between schools in the Anchorage area and their public green spaces.

Anchorage school teachers are using their nearby parks and trails as outdoor learning spaces and they need YOU to chaperone!  Chaperones must be available for a minimum of two hours a month during school hours.  No training required, but experience with children, education, and the outdoors is a plus.
