Health on Trails

Group walking along bridgeHealth on Trails is an interdisciplinary coalition connecting the outdoor recreation and health sectors. Partners include the Anchorage Park Foundation, National Park Service, Anchorage Department of Health and Human Services, Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, Alaska State Parks, Anchorage Economic Development Corporation, Anchorage School District, local outdoor retailers and businesses, and physicians with many years of experience working in Anchorage hospitals.

Anchorage residents and visitors find fun, simple ways to improve their wellbeing by using parks and trails 365 days a year.

Mission

Health on Trails connects people to parks and trails through healthcare, workplace wellness, businesses, and active schools.

Current Projects

Wellness Routes: Partnering with employers to create wellness route maps that take advantage of the Anchorage Trail System and encourage employees to walk outside during break times.

ParkRx: Helping doctors and health educators encourage patients to use parks and trails for disease prevention and treatment.

Park Rx prescription: quiet meditation at Westchester Lagoon, 15 minutes, 3 times a week. Refills: unlimited. Signed, Anchorage Park Foundation Park Rx prescription: take the kids to the playground and shoot baskets at Dave Rose Park, 1 hour, 2 times a week. Refills: unlimited. Walking programs: Supporting programs like Walk with a Doc and Health Talk ‘n’ Walk that invite community members to meet health providers and walk for the social and health benefits.
