The Anchorage Park Foundation family was saddened to learn of the passing of an Anchorage hockey and parks champion: Mike O’Connor. Not only did Mike serve on the Anchorage Park Foundation Board of Directors, but Mike also dedicated himself of a number of charitable causes in Anchorage. As the Co-Founder and Treasurer of the Scotty Gomez Foundation, Mike was instrumental in renovating and growing the number of hockey rinks in Anchorage.
Mike also helped to expand inclusive recreation opportunities in Anchorage through his service Director and Fundraising Chair of Special Olympics World Winter Games in 2001 and as president of the Board of Directors for Alaska Special Olympics. Mike was the original organizer of the CIRI Charity Golf Classic, which continues to raise funds for scholarships and youth programs in its 36th year.
