Thanks to MOA voters who passed the 2012 Parks Bond and the Alaska State Legislature, we were able to raise enough money to rehabilitate seven miles of the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail between 2nd Avenue and milepost 6.6!
Thanks also to the Rasmuson Foundation for their well-timed investment in the coastal trail project, enabling it to be shovel-ready in time for the 2013 construction season!
The Coastal Trail was built in the 1980s and since then had not received significant trail surface rehabilitation other than basic crack repair. The Coastal Trail is one of Anchorage’s most important assets enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. For more than 25 years, the trail had weathered Alaska’s harsh weather conditions relatively well, but several areas had deteriorated to the point of needing significant repair. Fixing the trail surface was crucial to protecting this asset for the future.
In 2011 a one-mile segment of the trail was successfully resurfaced just south of Point Woronzof. The 2013 project was a continuation of a multi-year effort by Parks and Recreation to rehabilitate the popular trail. Rehabilitation included repairing several longitudinal cracks or “crevasses” that present hazards to all trail users, including bicyclists, walkers, runners and in-line skaters. Also, bridges were resurfaced and repaired as necessary.
