Celebrate Qin Cheghi at Chugach State Park

June 25 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Qin Cheghi is now installed at the overlook trail next to the Glen Alps parking lot in Chugach State Park. Go visit it the next time you are on the mountain.

Please join Southcentral Foundation, the Native Village of Eklutna and the Anchorage Park Foundation for the Indigenous naming ceremony of Tanaina Peak near Flattop Mountain at 5 pm on June 25, 2025.

Qin Cheghi is one of 32 culturally significant sites that have been identified by the Native Village of Eklutna and will be installed over the next two years. Each site is a public destination along the muni park and trail system, which follows the ancient pathways of the Dena’ina.

The event will include a land acknowledgment, blessing and drumming ceremony. The Indigenous name, Qin Cheghi, translates to “ridge where we cry,” and is a sacred Dena’ina place of mourning and remembrance.

Many thanks to the Mellon Foundation for a $1.7 million grant to support the Indigenous Place Names Project in Anchorage.
